Why Some Business Moguls Still make Use of ancient mobile Phones

When it comes to consumer technology, many people are used to coveting the newest and shiniest gadget. So it may come as a surprise that a number of top executives and dealmakers are still clinging to ancient mobile phones.
Of these outmoded mobiles, one stands out as the clear favorite. By all appearances, it's the Nokia 6310, a model that was discontinued more than six years ago. Among its devotees, according to the Financial Times, are Martin Schulz, the president of the European Union's parliament; retail mogul Philip Green; and Julian Dunkerton, chief executive of clothing company SuperGroup, which is publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange and has a market capitalization of more than $1.6 billion.
Why would global leaders hang on to obsolete technology, especially in the high-flying, status-conscious set they move in?
For one thing, old Nokias were built to last: They are hard to damage (no touchscreen to worry about) and have a long battery life. Also, being less connected can actually be an advantage, improving your focus on what's important. With the Nokia 6310, "I'm not bombarded with emails every minute, allowing me to deal with the crucial stuff," Dunkerton told the FT.
And it turns out, an old "dumb phone" can actually serve as a status symbol. It signals to associates that you can't be bothered to check email every 10 minutes. Other people actually like the retro aesthetics.
If you feel the urge to go back to the future, you would do well to check online marketplaces. A search of eBay turns up a number of Nokia 6310 phones for sale, with "buy it now" prices ranging from $44 to $64. Not a bad price for a decent phone -- and a little bit of history.

Buddhist monk enters trance in bid to meditate himself to death

A Buddhist monk who said it's time for him to die has decided to lay in a coffin and 'meditate himself to death'.

The Thai holyman told his followers that if he did indeed pass away, the coffin would self-combust on Thursday.

The monk, Phra Khru Weruwan Chantarungsi, 65, who is also known as Luang Pu Pim, is the abbot of Wat Weruwan temple in Tambon Thung Phra in Thailand - and is in good health, according to temple representatives.

However, his daughter, 41-year-old Chanakarn Srisombat, insisted that he was poorly, according to the Bangkok Post.

She added that he'd died once before in a cave but that a miracle had brought him back to life.

Mr Pim's coffin was placed outside his living quarters on Tuesday after he'd delivered his last sermon, in which he explained that death something that comes to everyone.

Detractors of Mr Pim's actions say that he's being anti-Buddhist, by 'showing off'. However, his followers strongly refute that he's seeking attention.

Many of them have stayed at the temple to witness the coffin being consumed by fire.

The coffin has several holes in it, to allow Mr Pim to breathe.

Khloe Kardashian and French Montana split after eight months of dating

Khloe Kardashian is reportedly single again. The "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star has allegedly split from rapper French Montana after eight months of dating. Us Weekly claims the couple was "on a break" and Khloe just needed her space. Meanwhile, E! News says they were done for good but French "won't really accept it."

Rumors suggest French was using Khloe for fame. Even her family including momager Kris Jenner and sister Kim Kardashian thought so, but the reality TV star didn't seem too concerned about it. What really turned her off was reportedly his "needy" behavior. "It grated on her that he became so dependent on her," a source told Us Weekly.

French, whose real name is Karim Kharbouch, is allegedly trying to save their romance, "but eventually they will be totally broken up," an insider says to E!. "For all intents and purposes, Khloe is single again." The source adds, "She's just decided to move on. Khloe thinks he's a great guy but it just wasn't working out."

Manchester United aim Premier League top three this season with Louis Van Gaal in charge

Louis van Gaal is expected to take Manchester United back into the top three in the Premier League this season — and he will have to do it without any major signings in January.

The target was revealed by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward as he detailed the club’s accounts for last season and made forecasts for this campaign.

Figures published show United had record income of £433.2million for the 2013-14 season, but that is expected to plunge to £395m because the club are not in the Champions League, from which they made about £55m last season.

Getting back into Europe is an urgent priority for United and Woodward confirmed Van Gaal’s target when he said: ‘We assume third in our budgets.’

Another consequence of David Moyes’ miserable year in charge was £5.2m in ‘exceptional costs’, most of which represented compensation payments to the former manager and his staff.

Woodward gave the strongest indication yet that there will not be a further splurge in January to follow the £153.1m spent on Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Radamel Falcao. ‘We don’t intend to significantly increase capital expenditure [by buying players] in January,’ he said during a conference call aimed at investors in the 10 per cent of the club that is traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

‘We will continue to monitor in association with Louis his view of the squad and which areas we want to strengthen and which areas we want to sell. I wouldn’t have expectations for January but if there is a willingness from the manager, we will engage with him and if there is an opportunity, we will try and take that as we did last January.’

Woodward said the club was ‘very proud’ of the record income figures and added: ‘With Louis van Gaal at the helm as manager, and the recent signing of some of the world’s leading players to further strengthen our squad, we are very excited about the future and believe it’s the start of a new chapter in the club’s history.

‘Louis’ footballing philosophy fits very well with Manchester United and he has an impressive track record of success throughout his career, winning league titles with every club he has managed.’

Mingda Southwest China: Covering an entire road with rice to dry it... allowing motorist drive over them

Welcome to the town where the streets are paved with rice.  

While it may in fact appear to be something of a 'golden road', this street has in fact been completely covered in rice as it is left out to dry.

The farmers raked tonnes of shelled rice across an 800-metre section of the road in the small town of Mingda in southwest China's Chongqing following a harvest of the grain. 

Judging by these pictures however, the farmers were hardly concerned as motorists drove over the grains while going about their daily business.

While it may not seem the most hygienic or safest way to dry out the rice, the sight of the grain being left out on the road is not all that uncommon in China.

According to one travel blog, farmers don't mind vehicles driving on the road, as the draft caused by the passing vehicles blows away the lightweight husk which has detached itself from the grain, leaving the rice in place.

el clasico: Luis Suarez set for clasico debut against Real Madrid

Luis Suarez will be available to make his Barcelona debut in the first La Liga clasico of the 2014-15 season at Real Madrid on Oct. 25, the Catalan club has confirmed.

Suarez is serving a four-month ban imposed for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini when playing for Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup.

That game took place on June 24, with FIFA announcing the punishment two days later. That led to reports that the ban would be enforced until Oct. 26, thereby ruling the player out of the first clasico of the season.

However, Barca say the subsequent ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which lessened the punishment by allowing Suarez to train and play in friendly games during his timeout, mandated that the ban was to run from the day of the Italy vs. Uruguay game -- and therefore end on Oct. 24.

A club statement released soon after La Liga authorities had set the kickoff times for that weekend's action said there was no doubt over the availability of the 80 million euro summer signing from Liverpool.

"Luis Suarez can play the clasico which will be played at the [Estadio] Santiago Bernabeu on Oct. 25 at 18:00," the statement said.

"The Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] confirmed to FC Barcelona that the Uruguay forward's ban ends the day before, at midnight on Friday Oct. 24. Therefore Suarez can make his official debut as a Blaugrana player in the game against Real Madrid, should Luis Enrique decide to do so."

She has been criticised in the past for her fluctuating weight.

But on Monday, Lady Gaga had a few choice words for her critics.

'I'd rather be fat than shallow,' she wrote on Instagram after snaps of her in a swimsuit sparked a flurry of negative comments.

The Poker Face singer wore a flesh-coloured swimsuit as she posed alongside a swimming pool at her Dubai hotel.

'#bodyrevolution Proud at any size, because the inside is what really counts,' Gaga captioned one one of the pictures. 'Plus, it’s all how you pose! just ask the supermodels!'

 

When commenters wrote nasty comments about her weight, one fan jumped to her defense, stating: 'To everyone saying Gaga is fat: I dare you to post a picture of your belly and legs now.'

A grateful Gaga replied to the tweet, writing, 'I'd rather be fat than be shallow.'

She wrote to another fan: 'all day long every day, so what if I got a belly sometimes, sometimes I don't. There's people starving in the world. #whocares'.

A Baby boy born with four arms and four legs recovering well after surgery

A baby boy born with eight limbs is said to be recovering well after doctors removed his 'parasitic twin'.

Three-month old baby Paul Mukisa was born with four legs and four arms in Nabigingo, a small village in eastern Uganda.

Parents Margaret Awino and Boniface Okongo rushed the child to a nearby district hospital but were told there was nothing medics could do.

They were then referred to Mulago Hospital in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, where a team of surgeons led by Dr John Sekabira, a consultant Paediatric surgeon, assessed the little boy and discovered that not only did he have four extra limbs and what appeared to be an extra chest, but  that his heart and the liver were on the wrong sides.

Doctors also discovered that the parasitic twin shared part of the boy's pelvic bone.

Surgeons then discharged the baby for three months, allowing him to grow large enough for them to safely operate on him.

On August 18, three surgeons performed on Pail at the Ugandan hospital. Over three hours they carefully separated parts of the parasitic twin from his body.

Dr Nasser Kakembo, one of the surgeons who carried out the operation, told CNN: 'The baby was given general anesthesia and the torso and trunk of the parasitic twin -- which had two arms but no head or heart -- was detached from the host baby.

'Then we also detached the lower limbs of the parasitic twin from the host, which included disarticulating the right and left lower limbs as they were attached by joints. We controlled the bleeding and fashioned skin flaps to close the resulting wound.

He said there was only minor blood loss and no post-operation complications.

The Official Release Date for 'The Pinkprint' Album is revealed

Nicki Minaj's "The Pinkprint" album finally has an official release date. On Tuesday, September 9, the raptress took to Twitter to announce her highly-anticipated third studio effort would hit the stores on November 24.

The follow-up to 2012's "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded" has so far been preceded by singles "Pills N Potions" and "Anaconda". The latter track, which samples Sir Mix-A-Lot's 1992 hit "Baby's Got Back", is currently sitting at No. 3 on Billboard Hot 100.

Minaj has said that "The Pinkprint" is a nod to Jay-Z's 2001 album "The Blueprint". "I wanted to do that, I wanted to be like Jay Z. I felt like with what I'm doing, I want female rappers to be able to pattern themselves with what I've done one day," she told MTV.

Of what to expect from the eagerly-awaited LP, Minaj explained to "The Breakfast Club", "I think the album is so classic. It's gonna feel so good and I think it will probably be something that female rappers look to as a Pinkprint for years to come."

Apple Unveils iPhone 6

At one of the most anticipated launch events in recent memory, Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled two new versions of the iPhone 6, the latest edition of the company's signature device.

According to the Verge, multiple reports over the past several months suggest Apple was planning on launching two completely new and different versions of the iPhone 6: one at 4.7 inches and another at 5.5 inches. This makes total sense, considering that smartphone screens have been getting bigger and bigger over the past decade. 

And the Verge was right: Cook unveiled the iPhone 6 and the oversized iPhone 6 Plus. Here they are:

Here are some details for the new iPhones, per Apple's Phil Schiller:

 - Both iPhone 6 mondels come with "Retina HD" displays, meaning they're ultra-sharp.
 - The two phones measure 4.7" and 5.5", respectively.
 - The 6 Plus has 185% more pixels than the 5S.

 - The iPhone 6 is 6.8mm thin and the 6 Plus is 7.1mm thin. That's compared to 7.6 on the 5S. BuzzFeed notes that this makes these new editions the thinest phones ever:

Other goodies to expect: There are faces in the messaging app! And landscape view! Just like an iPad!

 

Some final details: Schiller says the new phones will have a 20% faster CPU, 50% faster graphics, and a brand spaking new Apple A8 64-bit chip. Oh yeah, and there are 1.3 million apps available.

A new addition: Wi-Fi calling! Schiller says Apple is working with "a lot of carriers around the world," namely At&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, to allowe users to make calls using wireless networks. The Wi-Fi is 802.11ac, which is apparently "good and fast Wi-Fi," according the Verge.
There's also slo-mo video. SLO-MO VIDEO! The cameras on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus can shoot video at 1080p at 30 or 60 frames per second (fps), which is fast. Slo-Mo can do 240fps, which is also fast. 

The most exciting part of the whole presentation, however, has little to do with the gadgets themselves but the software: Apple is releasing a brand new mobile payments service called Apply Pay:

The verdict? Apple's new iPhone is new and an iPhone. It looks like a fantastic piece of technology.
The iPhone 6 will start at $199 on a 2-year contract, and the iPhone 6 Plus will start at $299. Both ship on Sept. 19 with pre-orders.

Shakira's parents, William Mebarak and Nidia Ripoll, confirmed that her daughter's pregnant with second son in an interview with Hola! magazine on Tuesday, September 9. "We're very happy," William and Nidia told the magazine, "Yes, another little boy. A playmate for Milan."

Shakira previously confirmed her pregnancy by posting a tweet on August 28, "Yes, we are expecting our second baby!! Thank you for all your well wishes!" The "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" singer then followed it up with, "The Pique-Mebarak family is still growing!"

Shakira and her beau, Gerard Pique, are already parents to son Milan who was born on January 22, 2013 in Barcelona, Spain.

Back in April, the "La La La (Brazil 2014)" singer told Latina, "I would love to have eight or nine kids with Gerard-my own futbol team." She went on saying of motherhood, "When you have a baby, when you feel his love, you feel so at peace with the world. You just want to share the good news and share how happy you feel."

He held his son's backpack in one hand as he laughed and joked with the boy, who is fluent in Portugese, Spanish and English.

The adorable kid is clearly taking after his famous father, wearing a sportswear inspired look for his big school debut.

The 29-year-old sports legend has put his son first since his arrival, so it comes as no surprise that he was present for the landmark occasion.

'My family comes first – my son is the most important thing in my life,' he previously told The Mirror.

'I’d love him to follow in my footsteps and become a footballer but he can be anything he likes. It’s still a long time off to worry about that.'

Robin van Persie vows to keep playing professional football till age 40

Robin van Persie is determined to play for Holland at the 2018 World Cup and intends to carry on until the age of 40.

The Manchester United striker scored four goals to help his country to third place at this summer's World Cup in Brazil and has already set his sights on the next one in Russia, when he will be 35.

And thinking beyond that, Van Persie is keen to stretch his playing career for as long as possible despite suffering various injury problems over the years.

Speaking about the next World Cup to Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant, Van Persie said: 'I will be 35 then and I will do everything to be there.

'I live quietly, this saves a few years. My goal is to play at the highest level for as long as possible and being available for the national team is a part of that.

'I am 31 now and I have a little less than nine years to go. I won't be playing for a major club at the age of 40, although I do still want to be playing professional football at that age. That's my goal.'

A possessive girlfriend made her partner of six years wear a T-shirt covered in pictures of the two of them together.

Abbie Bartlett, 20, had the shirt custom-made for her boyfriend Leon Connolly, 24.

It bears the uncompromising message: 'I love my girlfriend Abbie, I hate the girls in Ibiza, so please stay away from me'.

Miss Bartlett told how she produced the shirt as a surprise as he was packing his bags to leave.

Pictures of Mr Connolly wearing the T-shirt were then posted online and received large amounts of attention - leading Miss Bartlett to worry it could have the opposite effect and attract girls who 'like a challenge'.

But the couple, who have a five-year-old daughter and live together in Newcastle, have laughed off the publicity and are treating the incident as a joke.

Miss Bartlett said: 'When I took it in to the printing shop and explained what I wanted I swear they must have thought I was a psycho.

'Leon wasn't expecting it, I had mentioned that I would make him a t-shirt but didn't think I actually would.

'He saw the funny side of it because it is really just a joke, he and I have a really similar sense of humour.

'He ended up laughing about it and even posed for pictures wearing it.' 

Abbie, a criminology student at Northumbria University, said: 'Leon said he definitely will wear it in Ibiza now because he's practically famous, but I think it might have the opposite effect.

'Now that everyone has seen it online I think it might just attract loads of girls... some girls like a challenge.' 

'I have absolutely no reason to be jealous or possessive because I know Leon would never cheat on me.

'We met when we were really young and have been together ever since. I trust him completely and we've been on separate holidays before, that's just how our relationship works, we do our own thing.'

Lady Gaga flounced into the United Arab Emirates on Monday dressed rather regally as she arrived ahead of her first ever performance in the Middle East.

With the singer set to debut her artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball Tour concert at the Meydan Racecourse on Wednesday night, she was warmly greeted by screaming fans, lapping up the attention as she graciously signed autographs and posed for photos with her ever-adoring public.

'My fans were so sweet at the airport I was so choked up! I have been dreaming of coming to the Middle East and finally #dreamscometrue,' she wrote as she shared a number of photos on social media prior to making her way to her hotel.

And she certainly wasn't disappointed on arrival, declaring the luxurious digs 'exquisite' as she gushed about what a 'privilege' it was to be in the country and how 'gracious and kind' everyone
had been to her already.

The 28-year-old certainly made quite the impression as she landed in Dubai, dressed in a stunning sheer gold gown that was covered in gorgeous sequin and jewelled embellishments.

It also featured a small cut-out detail on the chest, while the delicate fabric exposed her skimpy nude bodysuit underneath that protected her modesty.

Justin Bieber's assault charges in Toronto Dropped

Justin's lawyer, Brian Greenspan, said in a statement to ABC News on Monday, September 8, "On January 29, 2014, Justin Bieber was charged with assault in relation to an incident in Toronto that had allegedly occurred on December 29, 2013."

The statement continued, "We welcome the decision of the office of the Crown Attorney to withdraw the charge, having reached the conclusion that there was no reasonable prospect of conviction. We have always maintained Mr. Bieber's innocence. The withdrawal of the charge is the product of a thorough and thoughtful review of the evidence by responsible prosecutors. We thank them for their consideration."

Brian told reporters outside the Old City Hall courthouse in Toronto, "[Justin] was obviously relieved because he has got a great deal on his plate with his busy career. He is delighted there's one less diversion in his life."

Crown lawyer David Mitchell explained, "The police have completed their investigation, having interviewed all the witnesses who were willing to speak to them, and having obtained all relevant surveillance videos and the 911 call."

He continued, "There were a number of people in the vehicle seated behind the driver (Abdul Mohar) at the time of the incident and the Crown is not in a position to establish the identity of the person who came into contact with the complainant beyond a reasonable doubt based on the available evidence. The complainant is aware that the charge is going to be withdrawn ... and my reasons for doing so."

Bryan claimed Justin maintained his innocence from the beginning. He added, "This is an example of the system working as it should. Police laid the charge after a complaint was made and the Crown did its job by reviewing all the evidence before reaching the correct decision."

Justin was previously charged with assault after the limousine driver said he was struck in his car while he was working in the Entertainment District.

Are they the oldest gay couple? As 90 and 91 years old gay couple marries in Iowa after 72 years together

More than seven decades after beginning their relationship, Vivian Boyack and Alice “Nonie” Dubes got married.

Boyack, 91, and Dubes, 90, sat next to each other during Saturday’s ceremony, the Quad City Times reports.

Reverend Linda Hunsaker presides over the wedding of Vivian Boyack, in Davenport.

“This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago,” the Rev Linda Hunsaker told the small group of close friends and family who attended.

The women met in their hometown of Yale, Iowa, while growing up. Then they moved to Davenport in 1947 where Boyack taught school and Dubes did payroll work.

Dubes said the two have enjoyed their life together and over the years they have traveled to all 50 states, all the provinces of Canada, and to England twice.

“We’ve had a good time,” Dubes said.

Boyack said it takes a lot of love and work to keep a relationship going for 72 years.

Longtime friend Jerry Yeast, 73, said he got to know the couple when he worked in their yard as a teenager.

“I’ve known these two women all my life, and I can tell you, they are special,” Yeast said.

Iowa began allowing gay marriage in 2009. The two women say it is never too late for a new chapter in life.

The Power couple 'Beyoncé and Jay Z' accidentally halted a wedding in Italy

Beyoncé gave one bride the surprise of her life over the weekend.

The singer and her rapper husband inadvertently crashed a wedding while holidaying in Portofino, Italy on Saturday.

Beyoncé and Jay Z apparently decided to visit a local church, but only realised once they were inside that a wedding was going on.

Fortunately it just made the day even more special for the newlywed couple.

And Beyoncé kindly took the time to pose for a photo with the bride, who couldn’t have looked happier at her surprise star guest.

The bride, who was beautiful in her lace white dress and floral gown, didn’t seem to mind in the slightest that Beyoncé took some of the spotlight on her big day.

And the 33-year-old was rather show-stopping in her black and pink floral bikini top, and a long pink skirt that was slit all the way to the top of her thigh.

Beyoncé also wore striped flip flops, a straw hat and cat-eye sunglasses over her minimally made-up face.

The Single Ladies hit-maker sported some gold jewellery as well as some matching body art, including a peacock feather design on her upper thigh.

The star of "A Million Ways to Die in the West" announced the happy news on Monday, September 8 by sharing a photo of him and David.

Neil captioned the photo with, "Guess what? @DavidBurtka and I got married over the weekend. In Italy. Yup, we put the 'n' and 'd' in 'husband'." In the picture, Neil and David can be seen facing each other while smiling. Both of them wore Tom Ford tuxedos. The wedding was officiated by the producer and director of "How I Met Your Mother", Pam Fryman.

One of the guests, Kelly Ripa, shared some details about the wedding ceremony on "Live! with Kelly and Michael". She told co-host Michael Strahan, "I spent the weekend, in Italy. I went to a destination wedding... the wedding of Neil Patrick Harris and his partner David Burtka. They got married, yes!"

Kelly said the nuptials was "very quiet, very private, family affair." She joked, "I'm probably not even supposed to talk about it." The 43-year-old host then added, "Neil said I could talk about it."

Kelly revealed, "It was a beautiful family affair in Perugia, Italy. They rented a castle - or I think they rented it. I hope we didn't break into a castle and just stayed there. She also shared a cute story of the couple's twins, Gideon and Harper. "Harper was going to be the flower girl and Gideon was going to be the ring bearer, and he said, 'I don't want to be the ring bearer!' And they said, 'OK, well, what do you want to be?' And he said, 'I want to be the orange boy,' " Kelly recalled. "And he passed out oranges to everybody as he came down the aisle. He came up with it on his own. He had his little tux and his top hat and he was passing out oranges."

She continued, "Later on during the night, we were dancing I said to him, 'Look, Gideon, I saved your orange because I'm going to keep it forever.' And he goes, 'Oh, you shouldn't! It's so delicious!' "

Kelly said of Neil and David, "Their wedding vows were so beautiful. It was a beautiful wedding. The speeches were very moving. They are such a nice family. They are such a beautify family." She added, "I was so happy for them."

Neil began dating David in 2004. They announced their engagement in 2011 after the passage of the Marriage Equality Act in New York. At that time, Neil said they were engaged five years earlier but decided to keep it a secret.
