Stunned passers-by told how they heard an explosion tear through the area just seconds before the plane slammed into a suburban home at around 11am local time.
Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Carey told local news no residents inside the home were injured at the time of the crash.Small plane crashes into home in Joliet, Illinois (Chicago suburb) https://t.co/wcyGqsOdE6 pic.twitter.com/Jr6cyhQTnm— Paige Leskin (@paigeleskin) July 21, 2016
"They did a search of it and nobody was inside," Carey said.Prayers to the people in the plane that just crashed near my house 🙏🏼— kg (@karrliig) July 21, 2016
Carey said he had no information about those inside the plane.
Shocking photographs from the scene showed a house lit up in flames as a smouldering pile of wreckage lies on the ground.
Witnesses believe the aircraft was small and unlikely to be a commercial jet but what appears to be plane wreckage can be seen in some of the images shared. The Joliet Police Department has asked local residents to stay away from the crash site in order that emergency services can carry out their work.@ReginaWaldroup a plane has crash in joleit, Illinois pic.twitter.com/6KcJHt65bz— gene williams (@chargers250) July 21, 2016
