But in the latest episode of I Am Cait the 65-year-old finally finds the confidence to strip down to a sizzling white swimsuit.
Caitlyn goes through her swimsuit collection with friend Jen Richards and after deciding against a cleavage-baring one she thinks would suit former step-daughter Kim better, eventually settles on a one-shoulder style.
"Putting on that bathing suit represents a lot to me,” the former Olympian says when asked if she was nervous.
“It’s kind of scary because, you know, you're exposing yourself. I'm about as nervous as can possibly be right now.”
But it turns out she didn’t need to be nervous. After getting in the pool to cheers from her girlfriends, the reality star revealed it was very “freeing”.
“Ok, I did it. I got the bathing suit on. It was nerve-racking, but it felt very freeing. And I did see my reflection in the glass door - looked pretty good.”
In the previous episode Caitlyn refused to join her friends in the hot tub during their trip to San Francisco, admitting she wasn’t ready to “expose” herself yet.
"This process of coming out doesn't happen overnight,” she said.
