'There she blows!' Horrifying pictures shows washed-up sperm whale EXPLODING as biologist tries to cut up its carcass

Gruseome history: The blast happened on the Danish Faroe Islands, which have a long history of whaling which has been called barbaric by animal rights activists. This whale's skeleton will be used in a museum

It is a job no man would envy.

An unlucky biologist has been filmed trying to cut open a whale carcass - which exploded all over him.

The sperm whale was one of two which died this week after being beached in the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic, captured on camera by the Faroese Broadcasting Corporation.

A job that takes guts: Bjarni Mikkelsen tried to cut open a sperm whale carcass which exploded in his face

The 10 most beautiful cinemas in the world

       Avoca Beach Picture Theatre

Rising out of the sand dunes just 100m (328ft) from the Pacific, the Avoca Beach Picture Theatre in a suburb of Australia’s Central Coast, near Sydney, looks like a surf shack or beach bar. Its single screen shows classics from throughout film history, and film appreciation societies host lively post-film discussions on the gorgeous outdoor terrace. Built in 1951 to resemble an Outback way station, the cinema, covered in logs and situated harmoniously within its seashore environs, is consistently hailed the most beautiful in Australia.        The Castro Theatre

San Francisco’s legendary Castro Theatre is a fusion of architectural styles befitting California’s great melting-pot city. Architect Timothy Pflueger, a Bay Area design legend, shaped its facade to look like a Mexican cathedral and blended Spanish and Asian motifs for its interior. Since it opened in 1921, the Castro has received many additions, like its neon sign – hoisted into place in the late 1930s – and an elaborate Art Deco chandelier. An icon in San Francisco’s gay community for decades, the Castro remains hugely successful showing new releases, repertory classics and communal sing-alongs. (Proehl Studios/Corbis)

Dubai’s all-terrain police car

       Brabus G-Wagen, on desert patrol

Formally introduced at the Dubai motor show, a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG tuned by Brabus became the latest exotic bauble to enter the emirate’s formidable police fleet. The tuning package brings Mercedes’ 5.5-litre V8 engine horsepower total from 536 to 700, and the body receives a special lighting package for patrol duty. Dubai already counts a Ferrari FF, a Nissan GT-R and a $2m Aston Martin One-77 among its patrol cars. (Photo: Brabus)

Banking on a wonder fuel

When Tesla’s Elon Musk and Renault-Nissan’s Carlos Ghosn criticise you, especially in the same week, chances are you’re on to something.

Both executives denounced the flood of hydrogen fuel cell news from the recently concluded 2013 Tokyo and Los Angeles motor show media previews. Parsing the tea leaves, their actions reveal the potential vulnerability of betting heavily on battery electric technology – which both companies have done – when a rival electric drive system appears ascendant.
