Ramzie Arefa, 22, was held when police stormed his family home near the city’s train station.
They said he was at the scene of the attack with his older brother and friends to watch the Bastille Day fireworks.
“He was there with my older brother and his friends. He was not near the lorry but when he saw people running he ran away too.
“He arrived back at our apartment later that evening. He had no idea that there was going to be a terrorist attack.
“My brother is not a terrorist. We are Muslim but he is not religious. He drinks, smokes and goes out.”
Items of furniture were overturned and clothes strewn across the floor following the police search.
The family’s front door was smashed and shotgun cartridges littered the hallway.
“We were asleep, They fired at the door opposite and then fired at our door. My son is innocent, I have all the proof that he is innocent.
“My son does not know the terrorist who did this. They handcuffed him and took him away.”
“He is normal. He goes out with his friends to cafes and restaurants.”
