Her lifelong partner had reportedly tied her to a tree with a makeshift rope made of his own clothes, but he was unable to hold on to the trunk until rescuers arrived.
Reports from Jingmen City, in Central China ’s Hubei Province, said that military firefighters received a distress call from a local who claimed his mother, aged 72, was stranded in the recent wave of flooding.
The caller said he was unable to reach his mum, and that attempts to throw her a lifebuoy had been unsuccessful.
The woman reportedly told firefighters: "He tied me to the tree, but he was washed away by the floods" - referring to her loyal husband whose last act was to use his own clothes to tether his wife to the tree in order to ensure that she survived the horrific ordeal.
The soldiers eventually convinced the victim to let go of the tree and allow herself to be dragged onto the lifeboat.
The rescue footage has since gone viral on social media, along with the heartbreaking story of the victim’s loss which has typified the tragic floods of the last few weeks.
