The Media Is Slamming Jay Z for This Racist Necklace, But They Got the Story Totally Wrong

As a slow news weekend drew to a close, bored media outlets tried manufacturing controversy out of a necklace Jay Z wore to a Brooklyn Nets game on Tuesday.

According to the Daily Mail, the rapper-turned-business mogul “raised eyebrows when he wore a medallion symbolizing the Five Percent Nation,” a black religious sect that stems from the Nation of Islam.

The New York Post added, “[All] eyes…weren’t on Jay Z’s better half, Beyoncé – but on the coaster-size golden pendant swinging from the rapper’s neck. Asked once if the group’s symbol … held any meaning to him, the rapper shrugged, ‘A little bit.’”

Sigh. The Mail and Post were unclear regarding who, besides them, actually gave a shit about Jay Z’s necklace, but they were sure to point out how “gaudy” and “controversial” they thought it was. Much of their concern came from the suggestion that Mr. Carter – a man whose corporate partnerships include Barney’s and Budweiser – "supports racism" against white people.

Arsene Wenger admits to Arsenal's drop in confidence

Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal now face an uphill task to maintain his record of qualifying for the Champions League in every full season in charge and believes his team, who were beaten 3-0 at Everton, have lost some of their “charisma” in a confidence-sapping run of away defeats.

The Gunners still occupy fourth place but Everton are only a point behind them and have a game in hand and Arsenal, who have never ended a campaign outside the top four since Wenger’s appointment in 1996, face an uphill task.

“I am absolutely 100 percent determined to fight to make the top four but it will be difficult,” said the Frenchman in his news conference at Goodison Park.

Blake Shelton Teamed up With Shakira at 2014 ACM Awards

Blake Shelton was among country music's big names who took the stage at the 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday night, April 6. The singer teamed up with fellow "The Voice" coach Shakira to give the first live performance of their collaboration, "Medicine".

Looking hot in a red strapless dress and thigh-high boots, the Latin singer channeled her inner country star as Shelton accompanied her on the stage. The two stars flashed big smiles and shared a big hug after they finished the song.

That night, Shelton's wife Miranda Lambert also served as a performer at the annual event. The songstress, who won the Record of the Year award for her "Mama's Broken Heart" minutes earlier, appeared on the stage in a simple white tank top and a pair of jeans when singing "Automatic", the first single off her upcoming album "Platinum".
George Strait gave a brilliant performance as well. After being introduced by Martina McBride, the veteran musician sang his hit called "I Got a Car" and received a standing ovation after he completed his set.

Other performers included Jason Aldean ("Night Train"), Hunter Hayes ("Invisible"), Luke Bryan ("Play It Again") and Florida Georgia Line ("Stay"). The latter was also joined by Bryan to perform their collaboration, "This Is How We Roll".

Lambert and Strait then returned to the stage to perform a tribute to Merle Haggard, who received the Crystal Milestone Award that night. The duo sang Haggard's "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive".

Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool penalty call correct

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is adamant that referee Anthony Taylor was correct to award his side a second penalty during the 2-1 win at West Ham.

 The Reds moved back to the top of the Premier League table thanks to Sunday’s victory at Upton Park, as Steven Gerrard struck twice from the penalty spot, either side of a Guy Demel equaliser.

Taylor caused controversy after allowing Demel’s goal to stand, despite Andy Carroll appearing to hit goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in the face in the build-up to the goal.

Liverpool’s second penalty also looked to be the wrong call, with Hammers goalkeeper Adrian getting a touch to the ball before bringing down Jon Flanagan.

However, Rodgers said: “The first penalty was clear and I thought the second one was a penalty as well. Jon gets a touch on the ball and touches it past the goalkeeper. The keeper gets a touch on the ball, but also takes him.''

Actor Mickey Rooney who probably is mostly remembered for his appearance as Andy Hardy in "The Hardy Boys" movies has passed away. His son Michael Joseph Rooney confirmed to New York Times that the actor died on Sunday, April 6 at the age of 93. He reportedly suffered from an illness for some time before his death.

Audience Treated to First TV Performance of GaGa's "G.U.Y." on 'Late Show'

Lady GaGa gave audience a surprise when she finally took the stage of "Late Show with David Letterman" on Wednesday night, April 2. The Mother Monster entered the famous Ed Sullivan Theater just to bring the entire audience of the late night show to the Roseland Ballroom across the street.

Rocking a giant yellow wig, GaGa was joined by host David Letterman and funnyman Bill Murray to lead the crowd to the historic venue which will close its doors for good after the "Applause" singer wraps up her 7 sold-out shows there next week.

Chelsea, Man City and Man all got three points

Chelsea returned to the top of the Premier League after beating Stoke City 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring on his full debut for the Blues before winning a penalty, which Frank Lampard converted on the rebound after Asmir Begovic saved his initial effort.

Willian then provided an excellent strike from the edge of the area for his third goal of the season to put the result beyond doubt.

The victory sees Chelsea move a point clear of Liverpool, but the Reds -- who have a game in hand -- can return to the summit if they beat West Ham United on Sunday.

Manchester City are two points behind Chelsea with two games in hand after they beat Southampton 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

And that’s equally haunting.  It’s impossible to verify but the picture tells a story about the pain and suffering that exists in Syria right now.  There are many in the media who would like to say this is because president Bashar al-Assad is a ruthless killer.  And that’s half true.  Like other government leaders – he has engaged in war and with that war has come the death of tens of thousands and the displacement of over 1 million Syrians now living in refugee camps.

But this hasn’t always been the case.  This is the inevitable result of a covert war being waged by the U.S., Israel and other Sunni countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia.  Our interests in taking down the Syrian dictator al-Assad are all about geo-politics.  If we take out Syria – we neuter Iranian influence in the region.  It has gotten so bad that al-Qaeda is now fighting on the same side as the United States government and Bashar al-Assad and his government are fighting al-Qaeda.  And Syrians are all the victim of this massive global covert proxy war.

It has gotten to the point where we don’t even know if the chemical weapons that were used in Syria were the result of al-Qaeda or the Syrian government.  When it comes to matters of intelligence and propaganda – it’s very hard to discern truth from fiction.  But no one can deny that Syria was a very stable country until we decided to go in all guns blazing.  We’re not bringing democracy to the world – that’s the sound of imperialism baby.

Aguero set for Liverpool comeback

Sergio Aguero will sit out Manchester City's game against Southampton on Saturday, but is set to make his comeback against Liverpool the following weekend.

Aguero, 25, who has scored 26 times this season, hurt his hamstring in City's 2-1 defeat to Barcelona on March 12, having previously spent three spells on the sidelines due to injuries.

The Argentina international has returned to training after recovering from the problem, although he is not match fit and will not even be on the bench for the visit of Mauricio Pochettino's side.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini told his prematch news conference: "Sergio is OK. He doesn't have any problems with his injury. He works just now with the squad but he just started on Thursday so he needs more work to be 100 percent fit.

"For this week it is too soon for him to start playing because he has only trained for two days, but next week against Liverpool he will not have any problems."

Pellegrini added: "He is a top player and he makes a difference. Sergio is very important for us in every game. It is a pity he can't arrive 100 percent now for Southampton."

Aguero said earlier this week that he is worried he could miss the World Cup if he tries to return too soon for City and suffers another setback.

However, Pellegrini said: "I don't think that has any relation with the World Cup. Sergio was very unlucky this season with his injuries, but I hope from now until the end of the season he will play regularly without any problem. It's very important also for him to play before the World Cup so that he arrives in the competition at his best moment."

In Aguero's absence, Pellegrini has three strikers available, with Edin Dzeko, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic all fit.

City are also without defender Matija Nastasic, who has not played since the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Feb. 3, due to a knee injury.

Pellegrini added: "Nastasic continues working in the gym with the physio."

Pellegrini went on to speak about another of his centre-backs, praising Martin Demichelis for helping City to keep five clean sheets in their last six league games.

Demichelis came in for heavy criticism after he was sent off in the 2-0 Champions League last-16 first-leg defeat to Barcelona at the Etihad Stadium, before conceding a penalty when Wigan knocked City out of the FA Cup.

But Pellegrini said: "Maybe, like every player he can make a mistake but he is very important for us during the season and he will continue being important.

"He is a very experienced player, with an important career here in Europe. He is a very good centre-back. I talk with the players internally and I am very happy with Martin's season. I'm sure he will be very useful for the team from now until the end of his contract [2015]."

The Chilean also played down suggestions that midfielder Samir Nasri is set to sign a new contract soon, saying: "We are just thinking about this match we have to play against Southampton. In this moment it is not the most important thing."

The "Wrecking Ball" singer announced the death of her pet two days ago, writing, "I don't wanna say it because I don't want it to be real... But my precious baby Floyd has passed away. I am broken." The former "Hannah Montana" star, who is currently on "Bangerz" tour, broke down in tears during her show in Boston.
According to Cyrus' dancer from "Bangerz" tour, Floyd was killed by a coyote. The dancer revealed the info in the comment section of a photo she uploaded on Instagram. "A team sticks together during hard times... Thank you Smilers for lifting @mileycyrus up tonight!!! The energy in the arena was indescribable... #ripfloyd #bangerztour #boston," she captioned the snap.

Jose Mourinho: We can spend big without selling

Jose Mourinho says Chelsea are capable of purchasing a 40 million pound striker this summer despite the restrictions of financial fair play, while insisting a deal will not come through the sale of one of the club’s best players.

The Portuguese also said that Fernando Torres has “a future at the club,” and claimed his comments after the 3-1 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday were not excessively critical.

Mourinho’s statements about his forwards after that game attracted much attention, but the Chelsea boss proceeded to praise Torres on Friday for “giving everything,” although he also said he wants more goals from the Spain international.

Chelsea will reportedly attempt to solve their issue of a lack goals scored by their strikers with the purchase of a high-profile attacker this summer.

There had been talk that the club would have to sell one of Oscar or Eden Hazard to fund such a move, however, Mourinho denied that is the case.

“We do what we can. We don’t do what we can’t. We’re not going to do it by selling the best players [Oscar and Hazard],” he told his prematch news conference. “We want to keep the best players we have and the structure we’re trying to build.

“Part of the evolution is based on stability and part is about bringing players in the transfer window like we did in January and what we’re going to try and do in the summer. It’s evolution based on stability.

“It’s not through selling the best players. It’s not through selling 10 and buying 10 that we’re going to reach it. 

I think Chelsea can do that [spend 30-40 million pounds] on one player. Chelsea can’t do that with four or five players and invest 250 million pounds. Chelsea can do that with one player. That’s the work Chelsea is doing and I think that’s possible.”

Mourinho was then asked about his “strong words” for Torres and his other forwards, but he denied they were overly harsh.

“I don’t know which strong words... During his [Torres’] period at the club he had moments and some of them important moments,” Mourinho said. “But long periods performing Sunday in, Sunday out, he is not having a lot. Stability in his performances, but he is not having a lot. But moments of important goals, in spite of not scoring a lot during his career at Chelsea.

“He always had his moments. I believe in these moments until the end of the season. We have six league matches, one Champions League match that can transform to three. I trust that he can have these moments.

“He has a future. If you want to improve, I think everybody wants to improve and obviously Chelsea wants to improve. That’s normal. Does he have a future? Yes he has. He has a contract. He’s a good professional. 

He works hard for the team. Obviously, we want him to score more goals. Obviously, he wants to score more goals but he has a future.  

“He’s a good professional and tries to do his best. I think if people give everything they have, you never can complain. He’s a good professional in training and his social life. When he’s on the pitch he tries to do his best. We want more but he’s the first one that wants more, but he’s the kind of player that I respect. He deserves to be respected. Nothing more I can say about it.”

Arsene Wenger: I won't choose my successor

Arsene Wenger says he will have no input in choosing his eventual successor at Arsenal.

The Gunners travel to Goodison Park this Sunday to face Everton, with Wenger coming up against Roberto Martinez -- a man who has been tipped by some to take over at the Emirates Stadium when the Frenchman steps down.

But while Sir Alex Ferguson had a major influence on David Moyes’ appointment at Manchester United last summer following his retirement, Wenger insists he will play no part in such a decision at Arsenal.

“I have told you many times, it is not my job to show, to choose who will follow me after, when I leave one day,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wenger suggested the rules on importing youngsters may need to be changed by FIFA following Barcelona’s pending transfer ban, although he still had some criticism for the Catalan club.

“Certainly they have not respected the rules,” Wenger said. “The rule is quite simple, you cannot move the players before the age of 16 unless their parents move for professional reasons, so that of course creates a big debate -- do the parents move for professional reasons or not? In this case, FIFA has judged the parents moved for football reasons and that is why they were banned because they have not respected the rules.

“What is not right is that the children move under the age of 16 without their parents. That is absolutely not right. Do they have to change the rules so you allow children to move with their parents if the club takes care of the parents? Maybe we have to go that way because it happens.”

World Poorest Leader Holder: President of Uruguay Overthrown in Ranking by Nepal's Prime Minister

When people write about José Mujica, the president of Uruguay, they usually note a number of things about him: His frugality, the austerity of his lifestyle, sometimes his lack of shoes. The BBC even called him the "world's poorest president" a few years back.

It's an impressive reputation that appears to be bellied by a heartfelt concern about economic inequality, and it was well illustrated recently by a photograph of Mujica dressed quite stereo-typically at a government meeting.

Mujica's frugal lifestyle will always be admirable, but he may be facing a challenge to his crown of world's 'poorest' world leader. According to new reports, Nepali Prime Minister Sushil Koirala appears to have now taken his throne.

Koirala was sworn in Feb. 11, and while he was already known for a frugal lifestyle (he's from a rich family but declined an inheritance from his father), his reputation has been bolstered by a number of actions since taking office.

For example, his declared possessions on his Web site are three cellphones – one of which is an iPhone and another doesn't actually work.

That's not much, even compared to Mujica, whose only listed possession is a 20-year-old Volkswagon Beetle, reportedly valued at $1,900 in 2010. Koirala reportedly owns no land either: He lived in a rented house until recently; he's now residing in the prime minister's official residence. Koirala's lifestyle is said to come from his simple tastes. According to the BBC, he even gave back $650 he had received as an allowance for a recent trip to Burma.

Both Mujica and Koirala's frugality seem to have been influenced by their radical younger years: Mujica was a formerly member of the left-wing guerrilla group Tupamaros, while Koirala was jailed in the his 30s for his involvement in a plane hijacking.

Mujica may be able to keep at least some of his titles on a technicality, however. In Uruguay's presidential system, he is both the head of government and head of state. Nepal, however, has both a prime minister and a president. While Koirala may control the government and hold the real power, the head of state is President Ram Baran Yadav.

Miley Cyrus Cries Onstage and Hugs Giant Inflatable Floyd at Boston Concert

Miley Cyrus, who lost her favorite dog Floyd earlier this week, broke down in tears onstage when she was performing at TD Garden in Boston on Wednesday night, April 2. The 21-year-old singer looked fine until a giant inflatable Floyd came out on stage.

The star, who was in the middle of performing "Can't Be Tamed", stopped singing and started crying while hugging the giant dog's paw. Her younger sister Noah Cyrus eventually came to the stage to console her.

Similar thing happened earlier that day. During soundcheck before the concert, Cyrus shed tears as she was covering Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" as a tribute to Floyd.

"I'm sure you guys already know, but the reason that I'm so upset is my dog, I shouldn't say he was my favorite but he was my favorite, he passed away. We used to always listen to Fleetwood Mac together, it's his favorite song...so I wanna do this song for Floyd," she told the crowd before the performance.

Mid-song, the former "Hannah Montana" actress cried and her sister Noah rushed to the stage to give her a hug.

PSG and Chelsea's Supporters Clash

About 200 supporters of Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea fought in a city center street prior to their teams' Champions League quarterfinal match on Wednesday.

PSG's director of security Jean-Philippe d'Halliville said that some 100 fans from each side -- including former members of PSG's notorious and now disbanded Kop of Boulogne hooligan group -- fought for up to three minutes before riot police intervened. 

He did not give further details on whether there were any arrests or injuries. BFMTV reported two fans were hurt.

A group of Chelsea fans stampeded down a street while making Nazi salutes and smashing cafes and shops, according to The Guardian.

The also chanted racist abuse and threw bottles at bystanders before running from the riot police.

Despite tight security around the Gare du Nord train station and another known hangout for PSG troublemakers, the violence broke out on Rue Saint-Denis, near to the popular Chatelet area about two hours before the game.

Miley Cyrus got emotional when she took the stage in Boston a day after the death of her beloved pooch Floyd. During soundcheck before her concert at TD Garden on Wednesday, April 2, the 21-year-old starlet broke down in tears as she performed a song dedicated to the late dog.

"I'm sure you guys already know, but the reason that I'm so upset is my dog, I shouldn't say he was my favorite but he was my favorite, he passed away," Cyrus told the crowd. "We used to always listen to Fleetwood Mac together, it's his favorite song...so I wanna do this song for Floyd. This song is 'Landslide'."

The former Disney star was seen wiping away tears from her face several times during the performance. Her younger sister Noah Cyrus eventually came to the stage to comfort the singer with a hug.

On Tuesday, Cyrus took to Twitter to announce her dog's passing. "I don't wanna say it because I don't want it to be real... But my precious baby Floyd has passed away," she said. "I know I don't mean it but I wish he would've taken me with him... this is unbearable. What am I gonna do without him?"

She additionally apologized to fans who already had tickets to her Boston show. "I'm sorry in advance if I am not myself tomorrow Boston. I will try my best to be my best," she continued.

Chelsea's Hope Dashed by Clinical Pastore

Chelsea's hopes of advancing from the Champions League quarterfinals hang by a thread after Paris St Germain claimed a convincing first leg win at the Parc des Princes.

Eden Hazard's penalty had given the Blues a potentially vital away goal, but Javier Pastore's brilliant stoppage-time solo goal, added to earlier strikes from Ezequiel Lavezzi and a David Luiz own goal, saw PSG take a two-goal advantage into next week's second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, the 2012 European champions, were looking to book their place in a seventh semi-final in 11 campaigns but started without a recognised striker.

With Samuel Eto'o injured, Jose Mourinho selected Andre Schurrle as a 'false nine', appearing to finally lose patience with Fernando Torres.

PSG, unbeaten in their previous 28 European home games, began with a bang and took a fourth-minute lead when one of the three strikers Mourinho had highlighted could be the difference in the contest struck a fine half-volley.

It was Lavezzi - rather than Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Edinson Cavani - who fired into the roof of the net after a poor headed clearance from John Terry.

Chelsea equalised before the interval when Hazard - courted by PSG - converted a penalty after Oscar was fouled by Thiago Silva.

Hazard also hit the post before half-time and PSG were denied a spot-kick when Cavani turmbled under Gary Cahill's aerial challenge. Torres replaced Schurrle after 60 minutes, but no sooner had he joined the action than Chelsea were behind again as Lavezzi's free-kick was swung in menacingly and bundled into the net by David Luiz.

Ibrahimovic, still chasing a first Champions League triumph, departed clutching his right hamstring with more than 20 minutes remaining - but Pastore ensured the night and potentially the tie would end in PSG's favour, beating Petr Cech at his near post after a mazy run.

Two changes were made to the Chelsea line-up following the loss at Crystal Palace which saw Mourinho concede the Premier League title chase was over.

Ramires and Willian replaced the ineligible Nemanja Matic and Torres, whose place at the focal point of the attack was taken by Schurrle.

The Germany international performed the same role against Manchester United last August in a dour goalless draw and Mourinho would have been content for a similar result.

That possibility was soon extinguished as Ibrahimovic robbed Luiz and Terry's weak header from Blaise Matuidi's cross fell for Lavezzi, who hit an exquisite half-volley into the roof of Cech's net.

Chelsea were struggling to get hold of the ball, giving it away freely, and a poor Schurrle corner resulted in a Lavezzi-led counter-attack and Ramires halting the move cynically at halfway.

The Brazil midfielder, in the middle of a domestic suspension, will miss next Tuesday's second leg as a result.

PSG were content for Chelsea to pass the ball at the back and - bar one Luiz shot from distance which was easily held by Salvatore Sirigu - there was little danger from the visitors.

The threat from PSG was all the more apparent, as Lavezzi held off Cahill to squeeze a shot into the side-netting. Chelsea were awarded a penalty when Thiago Silva mis-timed his lunge towards Oscar, felling his compatriot.

Hazard sent Sirigu the wrong way from the spot to equalise. The Belgium forward then beat Sirigu again only to strike the foot of the post with a fine volley.

PSG were denied after Ibrahimovic beat Terry to a cross from the right and nodded centrally towards Cavani, who hit the deck as he battled with Cahill. On this occasion Serbian referee Milorad Mazic was unmoved.

PSG had slackened off after the opening goal and resumed after the break with renewed vigour, Lavezzi rising unopposed to head just over from Matuidi's left-wing cross.

With PSG pushing for a second, Mourinho realised Chelsea would have space on the break and replaced Schurrle with Torres with 30 minutes remaining.

Moments after Torres entered the fray the hosts had their second when Lavezzi's wickedly inswinging free-kick bamboozled everybody, particularly Luiz, who inadvertently kicked the ball into his own net.

Hazard made a fine burst as he tried to spark Chelsea, but Thiago Silva cut out his pass intended for Torres. Willian then beat Maxwell on the Chelsea right, but no-one was in the box to react to his cross.

Ibrahimovic, after a subdued performance, limped off, with Cavani moving into a central role. The Uruguay striker wrong-footed the entire Chelsea defence with six minutes to go and his fierce shot beat Cech but went past the post.

PSG claimed their third when Pastore danced around three Chelsea defenders on the right of the box, cut in and beat Cech with a fine shot.

Scott, who turned 80 this year, and his longtime girlfriend Paris Keena exchanged vows on Tuesday, March 1 in Fort Myers, Fla. Matt Lauer shared the happy news on Wednesday episode of the show. "[Savannah Guthrie] is not the only one who recently got married," he said. The announcement was followed by congratulatory messages from others.

Scott joined the popular morning show as weatherman in 1980. He passed the job to Al Roker in 1996, but he keeps making regular appearances.

Scott met Keena for the first time in 1977, when she worked for NBC's Washington affiliate, WRC. The

pair have been together for 11 years before getting married. The newlyweds, however, apparently have no honeymoon plan after celebrating their nuptials. Keena told Today.com, "Our whole life has been a honeymoon."

Only last month Guthrie announced her marriage to communications strategist Mike Feldman and her pregnancy. "We set the wedding date, I bought my dress, and then I found out," Guthrie shared. "We are so excited, overjoyed and feel so blessed."

"It was beautiful. Just everything I could have dreamed. We just wanted to have this private moment. It was a small wedding. We just wanted that moment with our close friends and family to basically drop a big bomb on them," she said of her wedding. Guthrie and Feldman tied the knot in front of guests which included Roker, Lauer, Willie Geist and NBC News reporter Chuck Todd. Her brother Camron walked her down the aisle.

Real Madrid stroll to victory over Dortmund

Real Madrid's bid for a record 10th European Cup title moved another step closer as they recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at the Bernabeu.

Gareth Bale got things rolling with the opening goal inside three minutes and Isco added a second before Cristiano Ronaldo continued his stunning form in the competition with Madrid's third just before the hour.

That saw Ronaldo equal the Champions League record of 14 goals in a season and made Madrid firm favourites to progress through and avenge last season's semi-final exit at the hands of Dortmund.

Carlo Ancelotti's men could have added even more goals but found Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller in fine form, while the under-strength visitors failed to find the away goal which could have put a very different complexion on things for the return leg at the Westfalenstadion.

Madrid suffered a blow just hours before kick-off when winger Angel Di Maria was ruled out through illness, but the Spanish giants did not seem to miss the Argentinian with his replacement, Isco, impressing.

Bale's early goal would also have helped.

Karim Benzema fed the ball into Daniel Carvajal inside the area and the full-back immediately played it into Bale's path, with the Wales international taking one touch before poking it past Weidenfeller.

That was just the start Dortmund, without six players including suspended star striker Robert Lewandowski, would have been hoping to avoid - and it got worse 23 minutes later when Isco made it 2-0.

Weidenfeller had already done superbly to tip over Ronaldo's free-kick but he was powerless to keep out Isco's side-footed effort after Dortmund had been robbed of possession near their own box.

With their tails up, Madrid pushed for more goals in a bid to kill the tie off even before they travel to Germany, and Weidenfeller produced another superb save to push over Bale's dipping free-kick before the Dortmund keeper denied the world's most expensive player with an outstretched foot at the start of the second half.

Dortmund briefly threatened immediately after that but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang dragged his shot wide and Madrid then made it 3-0 just before the hour.

Luka Modric picked out the run of Ronaldo into the area and the FIFA Ballon d'Or winner showed great feet to take the ball in his stride, slip it past Weidenfeller and side-foot it into an empty net - matching the tournament record of goals in the same season.

Knowing their chances of going through were in danger of being sunk before the second leg, Dortmund pushed for an away goal but a superb block from Pepe denied Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Iker Casillas produced a brave point-blank save from Marco Reus.

But as they pushed forward, Dortmund could also have conceded more and would have been grateful to see Weidenfeller tip over Benzema's shot and see Bale blaze over after a good run.

Dortmund can take some solace from the fact they beat Madrid 4-1 at home in last year's semi-finals, and the four-goal hero of that game Lewandowski will be available again, but even a repeat of that scoreline would not be enough to send them through following this result.
