A young woman who spent years being bullied for being tall, has had the last
laugh after getting to the final of a beauty pageant.
Jessica McCubbin hated her height as a young women until she was involved in
a car accident, when doctors told her she would not have survived if she had
been any smaller.
Since then, the 6ft 2in beauty has used her height to her advantage and
wowed judges by entering the Mr and Miss British Empire contest with her
partner Peter.
Jessica, 21, said: 'I was really picked on at school - people in my year
would stand on benches and I would still be taller than them, standing on the
floor.
'I was told I wouldn't get anywhere in life but by doing so well in this
competition, I'm proving them wrong.'
Just before she was due to sit her GCSE exams, Jessica was hit by a car
while crossing the road, but
remarkably she survived with just minor injuries.
'I was on a zebra crossing and a 4x4 flew down the road and hit me, before
driving off," she said.
'They said without my height I wouldn't be here today, and I got away with
just bruised legs and a broken collarbone.
'It really knocked my confidence and meant I couldn't revise properly for my
GCSEs and despite being predicted A*s, I got Cs.'
But just a
few years on, Jess and her partner Peter Goldthorpe have reached the finals of
Mr and Miss British Empire, after moving from her hometown of Northampton to
Hull, East Riding.

The pair, who are the only couple in the competition, will now compete
against contestants from Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland in three stages -
swimwear, formalwear and club wear - to try and take the crown on Sunday at the
Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.
Jessica said: 'It is really nice that we have each other for support and
that we can enjoy the whole experience together.
'They will judge us on how we walk, our posture, eye contact, and whether or
not we are smiling.
'They like different things and I think they quite like the fact Peter and I
have entered together, we are the only couple.

The couple, who have previously taken part in numerous charity events
are hoping to raise money for the RSPCA as part of the competition.
'If anything comes from it, that would be brill, and really show that I
won't let the bullies win.'
Jessica, whose father and mother are 6ft 6in and 5ft 10in respectively, is
now proud of her height, and can clearly see the benefits.
She said: 'It's great for being able to see my way through
crowds!
'I can comfortably say I'm happy with it now.'
And, she's lucky to have brains as well as beauty, and has enrolled at Hull
University to study biomedical science.
Jessica added: 'I just want people to know that they should never give up on
their dreams and shouldn't let other people drag them down.

'I would never have done something like this before but it is great to get
out there and meet new people and it has really given me a lot of confidence.'
Peter, managing director of Goldthorpe Property Group in Hull, is also
looking forward to the final of the competition.
He said: 'It is really exciting to be in the final and I'm proud of us both
for getting there.
'I can't wait to get to Weston-super-Mare.'
